Health and Love in the New Year
2026 Step Challenge
One way we are showing self love in the new year is getting our steps in! The Fostering Community (FUN) workgroup is hosting a step challenge for Research Service at James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital (with support from TVAREF). The step challenge will take place from Feb. 2 – 8, to help Research Service employees trying to be more active in 2026.
Good luck to all who enter and cheers to the new year!

Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day, at its core, is a day to express love and appreciation for the people in our lives, including ourselves. This Valentine’s Day, it’s important to recognize self-love as an essential component of a person’s overall well-being. Here are a few ways to practice self-love:
- Reflect on Your Achievements: Acknowledge the strength it took to serve and the resilience you’ve demonstrated. Give yourself credit for your accomplishments, both big and small.
- Engage in Self-Care: Take time to do activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s reading a good book, going for a walk, or practicing mindfulness meditation.
- Seek Support When Needed: Self-love means recognizing when you need help. Don’t hesitate to reach out to VA resources or veteran support groups for assistance
Happy Valentine’s Day to all our veterans. Thank you for your service and the love you bring to our world.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Jan. 19 marks this year’s commemoration of King’s birthday. As the nation honors the memory of the famed civil rights leader, we also honor his legacy by considering how his life’s work has improved our lives and our nation.
King once said, “Anyone can be great because anyone can serve.” The VA serves Veterans, their families, caregivers and survivors, helping to realize King’s dream, ensuring that each Veteran receives the respect, care, and recognition they deserve.
Fittingly, the holiday is also a National Day of Service, so many make the holiday “a day on, not a day off.” Today, let us rededicate ourselves to our mission of serving Veterans—for their service and sacrifice has enabled all Americans to pursue their dreams.
